Performance Of Matting Test Methods Technical Guidance :

Prince Enterprises offer a wide range of ESD table and floor matting for use in EPA Areas. This technical guidance sheet has been complied to allow you to make an informed decision on the best matting to use. If you have any further queries or need some more advice, please contact one of our knowledgeable sales employees who will be happy to help.
Static matting is designed to drain static charge from items placed on its surface. They also protect the surface of the ESD sensitive devices from wear and tear. For a mat to effectively ground an item, the item must be either conductive or dissipative as insulative items will not allow charges to drain to ground e.g. most plastics. The performance of static matting is based on the material it is constructed from. The performance is based on electrical properties, tolerance to heat, chemicals and mechanical abrasion and cost.

Electrical Properties: For a mat to work properly, it must be able to conduct electricity and its range of conductivity is crucial. If the mat's resistance is too low, static transfers to the mat and a spark is created causing an electrostatic discharge which will in turn damage electronic devices. If the mat's resistance is too high, static transfers slowly and any items placed on the mat will not lose their charge. When the item is removed from the mat, the static charge will be capable of discharging to other items.

Surface Resistivity: This test does not reveal much about the mat's ability to perform correctly. However, it does allow differentiation between ESD mats and non-ESD mats. Although, dirt can act as an insulator on the surface of a mat, so it is a useful test to monitor the mat after cleaning. Standards All mats are manufactured to IEC61340-5 and ANSI 20.20 Standard.

esd mat, What is the ESD mats? An ESD mat – also called an antistatic mat – is a covering that shields an individual or a piece of equipment from static electricity discharge. These mats come in a variety of sizes and are typically placed on the floor or a workstation surface. What can I use as an ESD mat? ESD matting is generally available in Vinyl or Rubber material. Vinyl mats are the most widely used for tabletop or work surface applications. They are cost-effective, easy to cut to shape and provide excellent static dissipation. Rubber mats are used where high resistance to heat and chemicals is required. Do ESD mats work? ESD mats and anti-static mats for the workplace are both conductive products. This means that both, anti-static and ESD mats, dissipate electrical energy into the floor and thus prevent static discharge or even shock. Why is it important to use an ESD mat? The ESD matting shields the equipment and workers from static electricity discharges. These are mainly used in work areas where charges can build up and offer a simple path to the ground for static electricity. Without an ESD mat, your workplace and workers can be at a risk from static discharges. How long do ESD mats last? If the mat is used in a moderately harsh soldering environment (constant use, two-shifts), rubber or vinyl will last three to six months before it starts showing wear. This does not mean the material will lose its electrical properties. Some companies want to replace mats because they start looking bad do to use. Do ESD mats need to be calibrated? Calibrating your ESD testing instruments is a vital process as it determines the instruments' accuracy. How do you clean an ESD mat? There are two ways to clean your ESD mat — dry cleaning and wet cleaning. Dry cleaning involves sweeping the mat with a cleaning brush or broom (or using a dry cloth or mop) to wipe off the surface. Wet cleaning involves using clean water or a special cleaning solution to wipe the mat's surface clean.
